Project LEAD (Leadership Education and Development) is a leadership learning program for adults with mental illness and other major mental health conditions (the common term used in the mental health field is "consumers"). There is no cost to students.

The learning program consists of an Orientation Session followed by 5 classes taught over about a 3 week period of time. Classes are held at the Lapeer County campus of Mott Community College. The learning program faculty is made up of consumers who have demonstrated leadership practice abilities.

The ultimate goals of the learning program are to build the students leadership self-confidence and skills that will both help them assume desired leadership roles in the community mental health system and in their local communities as well as in their current employment and/or seeking and securing employment.

The learning program is a two year pilot project that will run through September 2009. It is funded in part through a federal grant award by the Michigan Department of Community Health and with Lapeer County Community Mental Health funds.  As a pilot project an evaluation of the learning program is being conducted. There is a desire to learn how effective the learning program is so it might be considered for use in other parts of Michigan after the two year pilot period has been completed.
